The Friends of the Historic Commons at the former

The Friends of the Historic Commons at the former Traverse City State Hospital, now The Village at Grand Traverse Commons, is hosting an event titled “Beauty is Therapy”, on Oct 15 from 1-4, with speakers including Raymond Minervini, informative sessions and a guided tour of the original arboretum. We would like to thank the Richardson Olmstead Complex staff, especially Paris and Patrick, and all of their amazing docents for partnering with us to showcase the beauty of this Kirkbride. Thank you to all the PreservationWorks trustees, who worked so hard to forge those connections and plan a fun-filled weekend. A special thanks to Dr. Robert Kirkbride for giving such an important and educational talk. Most importantly, thank you to all our our guests for coming, for helping prove that these spaces still matter and are an important part of our collective memory.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Buffalo, NY this year! ICYMI: A sold out crowd joined PreservationWorks spokesperson Dr. Robert Kirkbride at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in September to learn about the complex histories of Kirkbride Plan hospitals. In this lecture, Dr. Kirkbride highlights the historical significance of their architecture and landscape design, and shares recent examples of adaptive reuse and memorialization at several Kirkbrides across the U.S., including Buffalo's Richardson Olmsted Complex.
