Where on earth was that Kirkbride? The original b Where on earth was that Kirkbride?

The original building followed the Kirkbride plan, and the rest of it followed the cottage plan. In 1952 this California Kirkbride was demolished. The City of 10,000 Buddhas, a sprawling Buddhist community, now sits on the site.

139 years and a couple months later, the building was completely razed, despite many local efforts and several reasonable bids for adaptive reuse.

This California Kirkbride was deemed a “Fire trap” in 1942 by governor Earl Warren. The building was ordered demolished and a new, modern building was to be constructed on site immediately; however, this dragged on a number of years because of World War II. The new facility, still in use, did not open until 1954.

A bonus post for this auspicious day, July 31st A bonus post for this auspicious day, July 31st

[Ed. note: this was a post on our Facebook yesterday that we would be remiss to skip on our Instagram!]

42 years ago, on 7/31/1980, two Kirkbrides – Beatrice Hedley Kirkbride (my grandmother, 2nd from right) and Anna Kirkbride Shaudys (distantly related, at right) – attended a special ceremony at Philadelphia's Byberry Hospital for the dedication of Building C-1 to Thomas Story Kirkbride (1809-1883) on the 171st anniversary of his birth.

There are many details to unpack from this photo at a future time, but to provide just a few clarifying points:

To be clear, none of the buildings at the notorious Byberry Hospital (also known as Philadelphia State Hospital) were actual Kirkbride Plan hospitals. Nonetheless, the site was only 9.6 miles north on Rt. 1 from the Franklin Retreat (now Friends Hospital), the early Quaker asylum where T.S. Kirkbride interned in the 1830’s and took his first steps toward an influential future. Now, none of the Byberry buildings remain, having been razed for a new development.
